Matthias Weis is the managing director of the internationally operating [ui!] Urban Lighting Innovations. He has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of street lighting and the energy industry, including the management of the development and international market launch of multifunctional SmartCity infrastructures at EnBW, as well as responsible positions in the field of communal services.

In 2016, he received the Digital Leader Award under the umbrella of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and was named one of Germany's 100 most innovative minds by the business magazine "Handelsblatt" in 2017.

[ui!] Urban Lighting Innovations GmbH was founded in 2017 as part of the [ui!] Group.

With customized solutions, we turn street lighting installations into digital hubs - independent of manufacturers and cross-technological. The world's first standard for multifunctional street lighting, DIN SPEC 91347, is a central building block for our activities.

The [ ui!] Urban Lighting Innovations GmbH team brings more than 25 years of experience in the operation, construction and modernization of street lighting systems and public infrastructures to its projects. Since 2012, it has been involved in the multifunctional dimension of street lighting in the smart city context. We support both communities and regions, as well as utilities and infrastructure operators in significant topic areas of digital transformation, such as in the areas of environment, transport and safety. In this context, the team has been able to plan and successfully implement numerous projects on a total of 4 continents to date.

Our satisfied customers include the city of Bad Hersfeld, the city of Langenfeld, the digital city of Darmstadt, Stadtwerke Karlsruhe, Syna, Netze BW, Gelsenwasser and the Hamburg Port Authority.
Our solution portfolio is completed by innovative basic solutions such as integrable rechargeable batteries for operating IoT devices on a powerless day.

The [ui!] Group

is a synergy of the three companies:

  • Software Development [ui!] Urban Software Institute,
  • Urban Infrastructures[ui!] Urban Lighting Innovations.
  • Sustainable Mobility Concepts - [ui!] Urban Mobility Innovations (B2M)

as well as our affiliates in Australia, the United Kingdom, Hungary and the USA.

[ui!] is active worldwide and advises communities, cities and regions in their strategic planning for the implementation of ambitious climate targets, optimization of existing and expansion with new infrastructure, a more sustainable mobility concept and new energy concepts in public spaces. Energy suppliers as well as communal and private companies are also customers and partners when it comes to the implementation and operation of smart city infrastructures.

Standard DIN SPEC 91347

Currently, there are different topic-focused standards and norms in many areas relating to the topic of smart cities and the associated infrastructure. An integrated view of standardization is lacking, at least at the national level. Decision-makers therefore lack a reliable orientation aid that links the sustainable ecological, social and economic views addressed with the technological view. This DIN SPEC 91347, which was developed together with a group of members of the SMART CITY Forum - supplemented by other companies under the initiative of Dr. Lutz Heuser (CEO - [ui!] GROUP), is intended to close this gap in order to provide an overview of the possible range of uses of an iHLa integrated into a future city infrastructure. With the goal to ensure interoperability between different technologies and domains under consideration of existing standards, missing ones will be identified and their standardization will be initiated. The focus is on open standards, e.g. to ensure easy data exchange between other services, domains and cities.
