City lighting with future 1/3

Anyone who plans, builds or renews street lighting systems today is leading the most present infrastructure of our cities and communities into the age of digitalization.

A fact that should encourage some fundamental considerations, because after all, these plants are not only built for the next 5 years. Rather, they should be able to be used sensibly and in line with the times over the next decades.

2019 05 14 Bad Hersfeld Shuffle 3

For several years now, we at [ui!] Urban Lighting Innovations have been using street lighting for a wide range of applications in the areas of parking, traffic, environment/weather, climate development, and solutions related to security and communication technologies. In addition to additional functionalities, we also frequently implement intelligent control systems.

One example is the district town of Bad Hersfeld, where the lights will in future be controlled not only by traffic, but also by weather conditions and even by the citizens themselves.

Or in Gera, for example - in a special area there, we will soon be adapting the light to the respective situations depending on the noise level.

In the vast majority of cases, we operate in the individual portfolio (i.e., on standard poles) and create custom-fit solutions for the most diverse requirements of communities and utilities. Even fiber optic connections in light poles have already been realized.

In relation to the total stock, this still affects comparatively few light points that are equipped with additional functions. However, one does not have to be a prophet to be convinced that this will change dramatically in the future.

How fast? In view of the long periods of consideration in street lighting - where the foundation for the future must be laid in today's measures - this question actually plays almost no role. After all, a pole erected today will ideally stand for the next 50 years. If you just think about the smartphone and its importance today, it becomes clear what can develop in less than 20 years.

So laying the groundwork today for decades to come is neither outlandish nor fancy.

But what can you do to be future-proof and how can you take into account things for which the need will only develop in the future? Or for applications that are perhaps not even known today?

Starting today, we want to explore these questions in a short series here on Linkedin.

Practice-oriented and with experience from many cross-technology projects around the globe, we discuss in the next two parts the elements of pole and light fixture as well as small things that can quickly become of great importance.

At the end of the series, we offer all interested parties a whitepaper as well as a free consultation around these important topics.

So stay tuned....
